Originally from Bradford, Conor Murgatroyd studied at Chelsea College of Arts and then spent three years working as a painter and decorator, whilst also painting in his spare time.
He is obsessed with history, which has a great influence on his work. The scenes manifested in his paintings are eclectic in their form and origin, ranging from the 1990 darts world championship at the lakeside country club, to Magritte’s studio in 1923, to the surreal presence of a Yugoslav miner in his living room, and he has always loved studying flowers. His aim is to display this wide range of topics as part of a cohesive narrative. His work acts as a stage which brings together the myriad of characters and objects he has come into contact with; both imaged and lived.

”Superior Access Solutions’ is a reworked older piece. It has visual references ranging from 1946 East Germany to a 2019 New Cross building site. It depicts a lone Scaffolder staring into what seems to be a mystical and almost dreamlike mural statue of a Hammer and Compass. I have linked many references together within this piece, from the social study of the scaffolder as a worker, character and individual to my personal reality of working in the building trade, whilst simultaneously having the allure and calling to be a painter nagging in the back of my head.
